I had a similar problem, but I was also overheating on the hottest days at idle.

I replaced the caps on the radiator and the coolant reservoir, then topped up the coolant again and it's good now.

I'm not a pro by any stretch, but you can get both caps for about 25 bucks so might as well go for it.

Filter is clean.

Temp stays steady. Although it used to overheat, I put new rad/overflow caps on and burped it real good and that issue went away.

The 2005 I just bought does this too. It doesn't start swinging wildly until it is warmed up.

It was a bit surprising when I first noticed it dropping to almost nothing at idle.
