Thanks, those are good considerations. Unfortunately my 2012 does not have a Overdrive lockout. I could shift into "M4", but according to the owner's manual it may still shift into 5th if it revs high enough. But I'll definitely try that in the spring.

Ya I figured it out... Well, I read the manual. The Manual mode is not true manual, in my 2012 anyway. Shifting to M will limit the top gear available; you can shift it manually, within the prescribed limits, and it will also shift itself when it feels like it. Sounds like your car went into limp mode when the tranny sensors sensed excessive temps.
Replacing the radiator will go a long way to brining temps down as the factory heat exchanger in the radiator DOES contribute to ATF cooling.
