I generally run 5W-30 but read some good used oil analysis results on BITOG of 0W-40 in the VQ40 so I thought I'd give it a shot. Never again.

The extra capacity might be nice since it seems like you tow (often?) with it. You're already going to have it off so it makes sense to me.

I hate rust after living the US Rust Belt for some years. Any time I see it, I have nightmares for weeks.

Yeah oil level slightly below the top dot. When I park it facing uphill its slightly worse. My last oil change I used Mobile 1 0w-40 which may have been too thick for the VQ40 and caused the top end noise. Or this noise may have been occuring all along but I couldn't hear it over my timing chain whi...

Strange update. I was doing my rear brakes today and apparently it starts smoother after having the rearend elevated? Could it maybe be a pickup tube problem?

Low Pressure and Rattle at Start up

I've noticed that my oil light stays on for a few seconds after start up and my top end seems to be making a fair amount of noise as well. The oil pressure light may stay on for 2-3 seconds whereas before it seemed like a second or two. Sporadically it will stay on for even longer. I thought maybe m...

After I replaced mine I realized that I have an electric cooling fan. Hadn't heard it in a year!

Finally got it all buttoned back up. Changed the water pump, thermostat, valve cover gasket and belt tensioner while I had it all apart. What a huge difference! I can finally hear my exhaust and my radio volume is down a couple levels now. Also if I can do this, any one can. I used Ry the car Guy's ...

That Bosal looks $20 better to me.

I've used Walker parts but never a muffler.

That makes me feel a lot better. That's what I ended up doing. I figured a link was too bad and all the timing markings were lining up. I rotated it several times by hand and didnt hear or feel anything weird. Also the cams and crank were still lining up so I figured I was safe.

Thanks.

Timing Chain Alignment

I am shoulder deep in my vq40 right now replacing the secondary guides and chains. Everything was looking good but I can't get all of the factory marks to align on my primary chain. The two camshafts will align but the crank is off by about a link. Nothing has moved and put the engine in TDC but it ...

Is the wheel opening even 36"? I would think you would 4" or more of lift to fit that size tire and still be able to turn.

A wheel in the air with an LSD makes the LSD just about pointless. You can trick it a little with some left foot braking but for real traction you would need a locker. I haven't had much success with the ABLS off road. From what I have read on the Frontier forum (maybe Xterra) the helical LSD reacts...
