Rear wheel hub/bearing assembly 2005 XE

Postby Lkgboater71 » Wed Apr 18, 2012 5:40 pm

Hi

I believe I have a left rear hub/bearing leaking grease. There isn't a grinding noise yet, but I did notice a bunch of grease in the area of the bleeder screw while I was bleeding the brakes. I looked in the FSM on how to replace the assembly and it looks pretty easy, except one of the steps is to remove the drive shaft. Is that really necessary? It looks like the hub pulls right off the shaft. Or are they referring to removal of the cotter pin and nut?

Thanks.

Yes, you need to at least pull the end of the shaft out of the hub you are trying to remove. You probably don't need to pull it out of the differential.

PS I wouldn't change this out unless there is excessive endplay or noticeable noise coming from it. There is not much grease in it.

The grease could be coming from a leaking axle boot?

Thanks for the reply. Yes I was concerned that I would have to pull it off the diff. I'll have to pull the wheel off anyway to really see where the grease is coming from.....
