Why didn't Nissan use a Maintenance free battery??

I have a 2011 PF, and was surprised to find out my battery is not a Maintenance Free Battery; aren't most manufacturer's using Maint Free batteries now-adays?

Do you mean AGM? Most batteries I see are lead-acid. What they do is remove the caps on them, but they are still vented. So if you are in a high heat environment, they will still lose water, and eventually stop working. With non-maintenance free batteries (with caps on them) you at least have the option of adding distilled water to them.
