08 Misfired and dies

Postby akley88 » Mon Jun 23, 2014 11:47 am

so the other day driving to work i noticed that i had a misfire at around 3500 rpms. I then uninstalled and updated my bully dog which i was planning on doing. i then reinstalled the bully dog and the misfire at 3500 rpms went away. but after that the misfiring got worse at higher rpms. and then it go so bad that the car wouldnt accelerate and would buck. then it stalled out and died. now its sitting at the dealer and im waiting to hear a diagnosis of what the issue could be. and i had no check engine lights on.

so if anyone has any thoughts on what it might be feel free to let me know.

Keep us posted on what they find. Hopefully its a simple fix.

i have a few thoughts as to what the issue may be

ipdm failure

ecu failure

fuel system issue

camshaft position failure

its not battery cause the lights and everything else works fine its just the car wont even idle normal more then a few seconds

so the dealer said that the previous owner didnt take maintenance serious and the engine has sludge problems that are impeding the crank and cam position sensors. they replaced them but said that it basically needs a new engine for the small fee of 6,000. so i think i am going to try and trade it in and get a new car. so i will be selling my wheels and tires, intake and bully dog once i talk to the dealer ship tonight.

Ouch. That turned into an expensive trip to the dealer.

What are you looking to replace it with? Another Pathfinder?

I don't buy it.
What, specifically, is wrong with the engine that it needs replacement?

they replaced the cam shaft position sensors twice and the crank shaft sensor twice. each time the car runs for a few minutes and then gets clogged with sludge. they opened up the valve covers and said its coated in sludge. they said it needs a new engine due to the massive amount of sludge. the prior owners didnt take care of the truck to well.

My ex-wife ran her Nissan v6 Maxima for over 2 years without an old change. When she finally told me she was having an issue, the car was empty of all oil and the dipstick was covered in black carbon sludge. Values (and everything else) where tapping and engine was overheating and misfiring. (Truly it was the worst black tar looking shit I have ever seen in a motor)

Not having the funds or options to replace the motor or entire vehicle, I went to the parts store and bought a few gallons of parts cleaner, the stuff they put into parts cleaning trays. I filled the engine with parts cleaner. Started it and ran it till temp went up, then drained it. I did this about 4 times... Then filled it with oil and brought it to the Quickly lube shop for a commercial engine flush. I did that twice in a few days as well.

After that the the engine ran fine, except for a slight lifter tap that never went away... But it performed fine. We gave the car to my daughter and she drove it without issue for 2 more years. Total cost for all the flushes was about $200.

Before I would agree to an engine replacement, I would try this again if my issues was sludge. Sure it is pretty drastic, but what the hell, I figured it could not hurt. In addition to keeping the car, I got rid of the wife :)

Good luck!

im actually just going to trade it in for a new car. the wife wants a new car so we are going to try and work a deal out for two new cars.

the problem with trying that is the car doesnt run for more then a minute of so before the sensors get filled and die. they also said that with how bad the sludge is the timing chain would have to be checked and replaced. the labor just for that is expensive. they also said they couldnt know how coated everything was inside until after they opened it up.

Damn dude. That sucks. Let us know how you make out and what you end up buying. Are you putting ads in the classified section for your parts?

G'day i seen this post and had to reply i had a very simular issue after around about $3000 and 3 weeks 6 mechanics and 2 specialist no one could find the issue , until we found a manufacturing fault on a fuse panel , basically it cam down to shitty soldering not saying this is your issue but no thought that about my issue so it could be worth a look
