Rear lift gate struts

Postby cdt785 » Wed Apr 19, 2017 9:07 am

Hi. Any suggestions for lift gate struts for my 2008 Nissan Pathfinder? I would like a air that's gas filled but don't know what would be best. Thanks in advance.

There's a really long thread on these on this site regarding McMaster-Carr lift struts. You can get them with a little more lift than the factory units, which are a bit weak. I went with two of #9416K148 gas struts, which are 200 lbs. force each (compared to the factory 175 lbs. force) and they are perfect! You can get them here:

CN I ask you smj999smj, did these struts you pointed out come ready to fit your Pathfinder? Did it have the correct ends and does it stay up when it gets cold out? Thanks again.

........also, smj999smj, do you know the part numbers (McMaster-Carr) for the rear glass struts (OEM equivalent), and if they come with any necessary mounting hardware or does the OEM hardware fit the new struts?

It's been at least a couple of years since I got them. I think I just had to switch the ends over from the old struts, which is easy. Yes, they do a great job of keeping the lift gate up and no problems in cold weather. There are a few that went to 225# and, if not mistaken, 250# struts, that actually raised the lift gate higher when open, but they seemed to flex the sheet metal of the body, so I've heard. You have to remember that the rating is for one strut, so you double the lifting force. For example, the stock's are rated at 175#, so if you get the 200#, you are increasing the force by 50 pounds of force. Also remember, the higher the force, the easier it is to lift the gate, but, also the harder it is to lower it, as well. Around 2010, I think the thread pitch changed, so new ball sockets had to be obtained. There were numbers for the glass lifts, as well, in the article. I'll try and find locate the original thread. For my glass, I think I just got new ones from Rockauto and they are doing fine; I don't open the rear glass that much, anyway.

Here's the link to the original and lengthy, 14-page thread:
