2002, Cruise control stopped working

The steering wheel button toggles the proper green light on the dashboard, but none of the other controls do anything. Where should I begin diagnosing this? Would this issue trigger the Check Engine light?

A cruise control issue shouldn't trigger the CEL. Best place to start is check your fuses and make sure your brake lights come on when you push down on the brake pedal and go off when you release it. If that tests out okay, thenfollow the symptom charts and diagnostic steps in the factory service manual for the cruise control system (ASCD). Nico Club's site has free service manuals.
