Meh, Clutch issues

Postby Graham W » Thu Oct 04, 2018 3:29 am

Had a 'slip' of the clutch last winter in the snow, but seemed to cure itself and no problems since, until this morning when pulling away in 2nd gear on a flat surface the dreaded needle went up quicker than the speed.

No particular associated smell, and ive burnt clutches right out in the past so know it well!!

Best UK quote so far is £460, but will make sure they use a decent clutch plate.

I did park up, handbrake on, 3rd gear and let clutch up, it stalled so hopefully ive caught it quick, im led to believe they are weak and soon go???

Whats a DMF?

Too bad on the clutch, the friction surface does wear over time, though I've put over 300k km on vehicles without doing the clutch too.

Your either lucky or drive like a girl ? lmao

Cars booked in for next week for repair, ready for winter i suppose rather than clutch pinging in 4Lo halfway up a snowy road !

Todays the day....

New clutch, flywheel, bearings etc!

Typically its not slipped much last few days, but pedal still feels soft with not much of a bite.

Fingers crossed for a vast improvement later.

It was a 98 Honda Civic Sedan. I drove the piss out of it. But it was a pretty light car.

My theory is that after a while, the friction material develops a glaze on it which allows it to function, but limits the amount of wear on it. Brakes have a similar effect. This helps to explain why cars break when you borrow them to someone else. They don't drive the same way you do, and so that glaze or hardening breaks down and you have a failure of a clutch, or brakes, or other wear item.

Just a theory though. And lends credence to my making fun of people who have to change their clutches, maybe you don't know how to drive!

Just kidding... :)

Apparently the mota's being a complete mare to do!!!

The bolts were all seized, the clutch a bitch to remove and they say its fighting to go back together. Fingers crossed all will be fine after.

Its a garage ive used before and they not let me down, reputable firm.

All done, it’s like driving a new car !
Bite was really high before and pedal soft.
Now it’s about half to bottom and springs up, gears
easier to engage and what I had suspicions of the timing
chain rattle has gone.

A lot of bolts had siezed so new one’s :0)

Fingers crossed all good for a long while
