GPS mounting Ideas

Postby Jayb52 » Mon Aug 25, 2014 7:16 am

I have a 2012 SV with the factory screen but no GPS. Looked at the site where you can add a Garmin overlay, but that's $1000. Where are you other SV guys mounting your gps units? IS there a sleek location? I know the frontiers and the non screen units have a top of the dash hatch that can be added. Does that work for the SV?

GPS Mounts

I have a '12 SV w/o navi too. Personally, I use my phone as a GPS but the same principles apply if you choose to go with something like one of those newer Garmin units. I've tried dash and windshield mounts and they've always been cumbersome and cluttered with hanging wires. The most elegant solution I've found is a magnetic mount that sits in the CD player slot. It's very convenient to look down at for reference and doesn't block your visibility. Plus, it's right next to the power outlets and AUX jack so I have the wires tucked away into the little cubby hole beneath it and out of sight.
Here's the mount I bought:

It's far from an integrated in-dash GPS but has worked great for me and hasn't hurt my wallet.
Hope that helps.

Jayb52 - I have an 06 Path LE. I purchased the top of the dash unit for the XTerra & Frontier and it looks great. It is OEM and looks like it rolled off the line with it. Color match was perfect and it plugs in to the radio. Add your Garmin and you're good to go. Purchased the dashtop insert on eBay. for about $120. I thought I had a photo stored but cant locate it. Will take one and upload later.

I have the Panavise mount and it's OK...not great...just OK.

The problem with it isn't it's quality or stability, it's just that it puts my GPS unit very, very close to the shifter.

It does use a standardized mounting system and I do have a pivot added between the mount and the GPS, which makes the clearance tighter, so there's that. I've actually gotten a new larger GPS unit and I believe I'll be getting an additional Panavise bracket to move the unit up slightly.

I just stick my Magellan to the windshield right above the center of the dash. The cord runs to the passenger side and then I have it wrapped around the plug to take up slack. It doesn't get in the way and only slightly interferes with the opening of the top storage compartment.
I then hang a small plastic bag on the plug to use for trash.

Can you share a photo of this? I'm thinking of something like it for my VHF installation
