6,600 LBS should I ?

Postby Kestral » Mon Aug 17, 2015 11:13 am

Ok so my parents bought a new travel trailer its 29 feet and 6,600 pounds empty with a 600 pound tong weight. This camper will be placed on a permanent camp site and never moved once its placed. They have asked me if I could move the new camper from the RV dealer to the new camp site at total of 35 miles. It would be all back roads no highway so prob not over say 50 mph. My 2012 V6 Pathfinder is rated to tow a max of 6,000 pounds and a max tong weight of 600 pounds. Do you think I would be ok pushing it another 600 pounds over my max towing capacity for 35 miles of back roads? I am set up to tow I have added air bags and added a electronic brake control and I have towed my 5,000 pound (loaded) 23 foot camper without much fuss .. actually my Pathy tows my 23 foot camper with ease. What do you think?

Since you have already installed the air bags, I don't think you'll have any problems. The air bags are supposed to add another 1000 lbs. to the suspension capacity. Just drive with common sense and you'll be fine!

If there aren't steep grades I think you'll be fine.

I was running an '05 LE 4x4 towing a 28' Travel Trailer and was JUST barely under all maximum weights, except my tongue weight. I use a Weight Distribution Hitch which helps a great deal, but I'm still slightly over my tongue weight. It drove sooooo smooth. I had zero complaints.
I just thought since I've towed mine from Pennsylvania to Florida and back (in a stretch of 5 days) with no problems at all it might make you feel better.
Hope it helps!

Squatting

Postby ValleyWalker » Wed Oct 07, 2015 8:13 pm

Unlike the 2005 Pathy in my avatar picture:

But my new '12 Pathy squats a bit more than I'm comfortable seeing. What are your thoughts... anyone?

But just FYI, with the Weight Distribution Hitch, and the factory 4.0L this thing drives and handles great if you don't abuse the gas pedal when towing, lol.
I can't wait for this manifold to be installed tomorrow! More power!! muahaha

Quick update I did move my parents 6,600 lb camper and it went easy. Put max pressure in my rear airbags and the back hardly sank on my Pathy it worked great. It was back roads I left the trans in 3rd gear and took it easy.

ValleyWalker I don't know if you are running airbags or not but if not they are a must! That is way too much sag in the rear. There are two company's that make them for the R51 Airbag 1000 and Firestone and both brands work fine. If you do have them they must not be pumped up to max pressure?

Installing AirLift 1000

Postby ValleyWalker » Mon Oct 19, 2015 1:11 pm

Just a peek at how simple this is...
Install deflated bag from the bottom spring.

Right side (deflated)

Here is a nice comparison of the squat in my rear end before/after placing the Travel Trailer onto it's hitch....
I do have Air Lift 1000 airbags installed in the rear but they are not blown up for this comparison.
Note: Open each link into two separate tabs and flip back and forth between the two to really see the difference.
