Do I need the bottom lip ?

This is not my picture, but you can see the bottom lip on the front bumper. Does it actually serve any purpose or can it be taken off ? I just don't like the look.

That is called an air dam. It's main purposes are to reduce drag, and to lower the air pressure in the engine bay. Lowering the air pressure in the engine bay allows more air to flow through the radiator.

These effects are subtle, so you may not see much of a difference with it off. It's most effective at highway speeds. If you do towing it may help your transmission cooler be more effective at high speeds.
