Replaced Plugs at 112k

Postby heckler40 » Sat Sep 09, 2017 10:18 am

Just did this and I would like to share what the plugs looked like. Overall, they look good. No missing parts. Great job on NGK and Nissan for selecting them.

They look real good for the millage. I has seen some plugs out of a Nissan Frontier with the same V6 with 175,000 miles and frankly they could have made 200k by the look of them!

Even though my mechanic wanted the business of doing my Pathys plugs he admitted that they actually last a lot longer than manual recommends replacement.

The OE Iridiums from NGK really don't start showing much in terms of wear until they get around 120,000 miles in most cases. The first couple years of the R51 came with the NGK laser platinums, which is still a great plug, but really should be changed around the 105,000 mile interval that's recommended. Either plug will work in any year of the VQ40DE.

Do you know which plugs are used on the '08s? I'm just at 105k and was planning to replace the them per the recommended interval.

From 2001 through 2006, Nissan used the NGK PLFR5A-11 (Stock # 6240) in the Pathfinder VQ engines. It's their "Laser Platinum" series. In 2007, they switched to the NGK DILFR5A11 (Stock # 93759) plug, which is their "Laser Iridium" series plug. Both perform the same until 105,000 miles, the Laser Platinum being several dollars cheaper per plug. I've used the Laser Platinums in my 2008 and have put over 100,000 miles on them (I have 226,000 miles on the vehicle) and have noticed no difference in performance nor gas mileage compared to the Laser Iridiums. The only advantage I see in using the Laser Iridiums is if you should run way past the 105,000 mile interval before replacing them.

In case you weren't able to tell mine are the laser iridiums. They were in good condition and could have gone longer (which appears to be the general consensus here).

Thanks guys. I was planning to replace them at my next oil change, but it sounds like I can wait until closer to 120k miles.
