Talk To Me Goose.

Postby TooTallMike » Thu Apr 19, 2018 7:40 pm

Hey everyone. Gearing up to change out the timing chain tensioner shoes on my 07 pathy se 4x4. Got the chains and shoes and tension brackets. Any suggestions as to what else I should replace and whether to go oem or upgrade while I have it open. I'd hate to button it all up and then have to dive Right back in right after. I appreciate all the input and love this forum.

Specs.
07 Pathfinder SE
4x4
102k miles
Minor aesthetic issues minus the timing chain whine that's most apparent at the 2500 ish rpm range.

Water pump and thermostat replacement is a good idea. For RTV, I get Permatex Ultra Grey Rigid High Torque RTV sealant in a caulk tube; it's as good as the factory sealant and the caulk gun makes it easier to apply as you are going to be laying down a LOT of sealant on the cover!

Thanks smj! I'll definitely use that rtv. Any suggestions or other references for doing this job? I've done a ton of research but can always use more information and references.

You don't need the "special tool" to install the new tensioner shoes on the tensioners; I use a set of Channelock pliers with a set of plastic covers from some Craftsman Robogrip pliers (to prevent marring the plastic) to install them. Some have said they have pressed them on by hand, but they must have pretty strong hands because I couldn't do it! Having the ring gear stopper tool is recommended. It makes it easier when loosening/torqueing the crank pulley bolt and it also allows you to do the job without removing the upper plenum and valve covers. If you haven't read it, already, then I suggest reading the Nissan TSB on the repair.

Yeah I read up on that and I'm actively looking to get the ring gear stopper tool but not really wanting to spend 140$ for the hunk of metal.

Update!!!

Knocking out the timing chain guides and ran into a problem with finding tdc. I was referencing a YouTube vid and trying to go off the marks to save time and almost destroyed the entire operation. Luckily got it back on track and lined it all up. Wasted a few hours trying to line it back up lol. Had that not happened I'm extremely confident it could have been a day job. Back at it tomorrow and I'll let you guys know how it goes.

All together and I got a p0507 code and it won't clear. Cleaned the TB and changed the pcv valve. The pcv breather hose is hard as a rock and could possibly be cracked thus causing hi idle? Hellppp

You probably need to perform an idle air volume relearn.

I did multiple times and erased the codes and it still idles at 950. Unless I'm performing it wrong? I used a YouTube vid for an 06 Murano .

Could my timing be off by a tooth?

Usually if the chain is off by a tooth, you'll get a P0011 or P0021 code to trigger...or both. Idle air volume relearns can be tricky, especially if you don't have a scan tool to do it. There are a number of parameters that must be met such a fuel temperature and coolant temperature in order for it to complete.

Well that rules it out thanks ! So I met the parameters and conducted the relearn and the code hasn't come back. However the idle remains at about 950-977. For a start up it dropped to 725 and I thought it was good to go but on the next start up it went right back up but still no code.

I was unable to get mine to do idle air relearn via the pedal dance after three days of trying - had to visit the dealership so they could use CONSULT. All the other pedal dances seem to work, including non-OEM key coding at Ace Hardware.

I'll never touch the throttle body with a rag again!

So what should I say to the stealership? as far as to just get that done besides the bombardment of other recommended services or parts I'm sure they'll tell me I need. Lol
