2008 PF will not shift out of park even pressing override

Postby jumpinjoy » Sun Jun 24, 2018 6:18 pm

Hello,

My fiancee and I purchased a 2008 PF in really good condition about 2 weeks ago. We had noticed on a few occasions that when trying to shift out of park we had to press the button on the drive stick or press the brakes, etc. a few times for it to work. I assumed it was the shift interlock solenoid or the relay for it because I have had this issue with many vehicles over my years...

However.....TODAY after DOZENS of attempts to get it out of park, I tried using the shift override manual override button to no avail. We had just came home from using the vehicle around town and about a dozen starts and stops. It took a couple of tries a few times to get it to get out of park but it worked.

My issue is I know now I have to immediately fix the issue. However I CANT because when I go to remove the trim around the shift to get access to the components I need to check or replace I cannot because I would have to break the bezel to get access because the manual override will not let me move the shifter out of park to give me enough room to get the bezel off.

Has anyone heard of this or have any ideas what I could do or what the problem would be? Had I not been driving it all day I would think OK its a mechanical issue with the transmission but it has happened enough intermittently that I am really sure it has something to do with the solenoid, relay or shift cable, etc...

I appreciate the help in advance!

I doubt you will find out anything by just disassembling gear lever. I would rather try diagnosis procedure first:

1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Keep pressing shift lock release button.
3. Move selector lever from “P†to “D†position.
4. Release accelerator pedal. (Set the closed throttle position signal ON.)
5. Depress brake pedal. (Stop lamp switch signal ON.)
6. Turn ignition switch ON.
7. Wait 3 seconds.
8. Move selector lever to the manual shift gate side. (Manual mode signal ON.)
9. Release brake pedal. (Stop lamp switch signal OFF.)
10. Move selector lever to “D†position. (Manual mode signal OFF.)
11. Depress brake pedal. (Stop lamp switch signal ON.)
12. Release brake pedal. (Stop lamp switch signal OFF.)
13. Depress accelerator pedal fully and release it

Check A/T CHECK indicator lamp. It will repeat the diagnostic blink-code over and over again, so you can easily count:
- at first, there's a 2 second control blink
- then followed by 17 short diagnostic blinks, one per second
If all 17 diagnostic blinks are present, then there's no error code.
Error code is represented by MISSING one (or more) of 17 diagnostic blinks.

So make a chart, write down one 2 second initial signal, then write down 17 diagnostic signals and make a check after each light blink. If one is skipped, you've got your diagnostic code, which reads out by this cart:

1. Revolution sensor AT-106
2. Direct clutch solenoid valve AT-144 , AT-146
3. Torque converter clutch solenoid valve AT-115
4. Line pressure solenoid valve AT-117
5. Input clutch solenoid valve AT-136 , AT-138
6. Front brake solenoid valve AT-140 , AT-142
7. Low coast brake solenoid valve AT-153 , AT-155
8. High and low reverse clutch solenoid valve AT-148 , AT-150
9. PNP switch AT-102
10. A/T fluid temperature sensor AT-122
11. Turbine revolution sensor AT-127
12. A/T interlock AT-131
13. A/T 1st engine braking AT-134
14. Start signal AT-97
15. Accelerator pedal position sensor AT-119
16. Engine speed signal AT-111
17. CAN communication line AT-94

He can't get the shift lever to move out of park when depressing the shift lock override, so he won't be able to do the diagnostic procedure until he solves that problem, first.

Oh, my bad...I forgot to paste shift mechanism picture, where you can see knob can get un-clipped and removed in order to take middle section trim out (if you cannot move shifter out of the way into D position):
Image
1. Selector lever knob
2. Lock pin
3. Knob cover
4. A/T device harness connector
5. Lock plate
6. Control cable
7. Key interlock cable
8. Shift lock solenoid and park position switch assembly
9. Control device assembly
10. Slide plate
11. Position lamp
12. Position indicator plate
