Can I take it off

Postby nismopath » Thu Jul 05, 2018 5:19 pm

My exhaust heat shield will not stop rattling!! I tried getting clamps but somehow it is still wanting to annoy me. Can it be removed without damaging anything or causing any future issues?[/b]

I use radiator hose clamps (or, "worm gear" clamps) around the heat shields to hold them in place. In most cases where they cannot be secured, removal is usually okay.

Yea the metal ones are what I got. I put three on the shield but still some rattling. And I know it’s the shield because I can hold the shoes (while cold!) and it sto rattling. Maybe I’ll try another one and see if that helps first. I don’t want to damage anything but I sound like a busted up junker all because of a silly heat shield.

I just replaced a clamp on my 06 last week, so I know what you mean! I use a plastic or rubber mallet to bang on the exhaust in various places to locate the rattles.

There are a lot more of the clamps than you might expect. I've replaced every single one of mine, yet I still have a slight rattle somewhere that I can't find. Anyway, make sure you check every clamp. Just visually looking will do nothing. You have to actually get your hand on the clamp and feel all the way around it for any breaks. Similar to what smj does, I use the bottom of my fist to bang on the pipes from one end to the other. Most of my past rattles were found that way.
