can I use something like Valvoline Maxlift ATF to top off my power steering fluid? Or use it to do a drain and fill?

Both is 100% acceptable.

They do sell specific powersteering fluid but to me its distinction (if any) to ATF is dubious and its been a truism in the community for a long time that u can use ATF in powersteering fluid reservoir both to top off and to fully refill

I replace my trans fluid once a year and also swap the power steering fluid with Valvoline MaxLife ATF.

I use a turkey baster so siphon most of the fluid out of the PS reservoir and then refill to the appropriate level.

Trans fluid seems a bit thick compared to Ps fluid. You have any noises from your pump?

I also change trans fluid with the same Castrol. Sent it away for analysis a few years ago, came back perfect! Hope to get another 100k or so out of this rig.

The factory fill is NissanMatic "D" ATF, which they also put in smaller bottles and call it genuine Nissan power steering fluid. NissanMatic "D" ATF is the original Dexron formula and Dexron/Dexron II have a thinner viscosity than Dexron III/Mercon. All of these, however, are perfectly acceptable for use in Nissan power steering systems, including aftermarket transmission fluids like Valvoline Maxlife full-synthetic, Castrol, etc. What you DON'T want to use in Nissan power steering systems is power steering fluids that are clear or amber in color. Those are made for systems which use that type of fluid, which is common on many US domestic vehicles.
