Timing Chain Alignment

Postby docwatson » Fri Mar 22, 2019 12:01 pm

I am shoulder deep in my vq40 right now replacing the secondary guides and chains. Everything was looking good but I can't get all of the factory marks to align on my primary chain. The two camshafts will align but the crank is off by about a link.

Nothing has moved and put the engine in TDC but it looks about

Any thoughts?[/img]

Here you can see the two camshafts correct and the crank off

I often have to move the crank to the proper location when replacing the chains.

That makes me feel a lot better. That's what I ended up doing. I figured a link was too bad and all the timing markings were lining up. I rotated it several times by hand and didnt hear or feel anything weird. Also the cams and crank were still lining up so I figured I was safe.

Thanks.

Finally got it all buttoned back up. Changed the water pump, thermostat, valve cover gasket and belt tensioner while I had it all apart.

What a huge difference! I can finally hear my exhaust and my radio volume is down a couple levels now.

Also if I can do this, any one can. I used Ry the car Guy's video, the FSM and the Chilton manual to do it.

It retrospect, the video is decent for getting to the chains, but I relied more on the FSM and Chilton for the work. He has a few mistakes in the video that were covered in the FSM. If I would have been thinking I would have only used the FSM but it all worked out.

Is FSM the Full Service Manual? Just trying to understand the Acronym.

Factory Service Manual
We have a link to it here at The Nissan Path.
It's in the 3rd "sticky" in the "2005-2012 Pathfinder (R51)" section.
