Heater hose repair

My wife's 08 PF sprung a leak... it's the dreaded heater hose assembly. Going to have to suck it up and pay the dealership for the part. I saw a good tutorial on Youtube, but just curious if there are any tutorials posted here or any tips for doing this? Also, I see a very short hose sticking out of the firewall about a foot below the broken nipple. It's just hanging downward and is not closed. I can see some drips out of it but I don't see anything that it could be attached to. Is it supposed to be that way? I have included links to the pics, it's the last pic, the hose has a little bit of white discoloration around the end. I wish I knew how to insert images directly into the post but can't figure it out.

That's the drain hose for the A/C evaporator case.
