Trip to the NJ Pine Barrens

Postby markspath » Fri Jul 17, 2009 12:06 am

Anyone interested in going off-road in the Pine Barrens?

I don't have enough V time or $ to go cross-country again this year, but I'm still looking to have some fun this summer. I figure 5 days in the Pineys and maybe two or three at the shore will make for a good diversion. If your interested in joining-up for the whole Pine Barrens trip or just dropping-in for the day, this is what I'm thinking about:
  • Wed: Head out early AM and drive to Chatsworth, NJ;
  • Setup camp at Wading Pines campground, right outside the entrance to Wharton State Forest(1);
  • Spend the rest of the day relaxing and socializing in camp;
  • Thu: spend the day off-roading, stopping along the river for lunch. Mostly scenic drives, but maybe some light to moderate mud holes (optional), and maybe some Geo-Caching;
  • Fri: Rent canoes at Micks Canoe Rentals and spend the day paddling;
  • Sat: Another full day off-roading in the Pine Barrens;
  • Sun: Pack-up and move to the shore for 2 or 3 days
Aside from your high-clearance, 4x4 truck (stock Pathfinder is fine), there will be a short minimum equipment/gear list every will need. I'll post that later if there's enough interest, but it's the usual stuff like a good spare tire, compressor, recovery strap, and a CB Radio (you can get one off Amazon.com for around $35).

Here's a few pictures from my previous trips to the Pineys:

You might start here, and keep heading west. Good spots in South Dakota I can vouch for: Custer State Park has some unimproved roads, there's lots of trails in and around the Black Hills (Rushmore area).

I didn't see this posting before but if you do this let me know. I live right down the road and would join up with you in the afternoons/evenings. Can't take any days off though. My neighbors go out to Wharton every few weeks with their Xterra for some fun in the dirt.

Kind of bringing this back from the dead - I'd love to do some off-roading. I have both a R51 Pathfinder (the wifes) and a R51 Armada (mine). The kids loved off-roading down in OBX and this sounds like a blast!! Plus we love camping.
