Slow oil pressure gage

Postby jtrich » Wed Jan 06, 2010 2:16 am

Is the oil pressure gage supposed to move very slow? Mine takes forever to come up to pressure when I start it. It has good pressure when it finally stops climbing just takes a while to get there. I will put a manual gage on it when I get a chance its just cold right now.

define slow... like the truck runs for 4-5 seconds or longer? does the oil lamp on the dash illuminate as well? what weight oil are you using and what is the ambient temp? Might be a bad oil pressure sending unit.

I just purchased this truck so I don't know what oil it has in it. It looks clean so I will run it while I finish giving it the once over. The oil light goes off as soon as I start it but the gauge takes 4-5 seconds before it moves and then very slowly climbs. All the gauges move slowly I think this is just a characteristic of the vehicle. I'm sure it has plenty oil pressure. I will put a manual gauge on it when I change the oil to see how much.

The manual calls for 5w30, but says you can use 10w30, 20w40 or 20w50. I am going to put in Castrol GTX high mileage this oil change. I would say you probally have some old 20w50 in there and an oil pressure sending unit that is old.

Once I start rolling it I will change the oil so I know whats in there. I will probably just change the sending unit while I'm right there. This truck only has 107,000 miles and it look like nothing has ever been touched. So it probably will need a few things replaced.
