02 PATHFINDER SE ,STICK,4X4 Largest tires I can put on my..

Postby borninabarn » Wed Aug 22, 2012 7:07 pm

Hi Guys,
I looked through this thread about tire sizes but they were newer Pathfinders than my old 2002? I have 255/65-16 tires now on my 02 Pathfinder and would like to know what the largest size tire I can put on my Stock SE wheels without having a problem chewing up my new tires.I was looking for a more aggressive tread than the Michelin LTX M/S.that are on it now.
Also where do I look on this forum for Used aftermarket pathfinder parts/wheels,etc that people on here have for sale for my 2002?

Thanks for your time! Born

You posted in the Tires and Wheels category of the R51 2005+ forum.

I moved your post to the 1996-2004 R50 Forum, as people who view that forum are more likely to have the answers you are looking for. Unfortunately, it looks like people don't know the answer to your question.

Sorry I can't be of more help, as I have an R51.

If I were you, I'd take some measurements at full lock of the clearance between components and the wheelwell. From there you could determine if there is a lot of room to play with or not. For instance, on my R51, I found I could go from 265/70/R16 to 265/75/R16 (almost a full inch in diameter) with very minimal rubbing (just on the plastic parts). But going a lot bigger without a lift or spacers is not a good idea.

Also keep in mind that truck tires tend to have deeper treads, which are not necessarily reflected in the measurement on the sidewall. Deeper tread often means the tire is bigger overall as well.

Speaking of 2002 SEs...

Postby skibum » Thu Sep 27, 2012 10:17 am

Hello,

As borninabarn's question has yet to be answered, I probably won't get mine answered either, but here goes: I have the identical vehicle and tires as borninabarn's: A 2002 Pathfinder SE 4WD manual trans with 16x7" 6 bolt 5.5" (139.7mm) wheels and 255-65R16 Michelin LTXs. I want to obtain a second set of 16x7" aftermarket rims for use with winter tires. I'm on the fence with regard to tire size - they'll either be 245-70R16 or 235-75R16 - but am leaning toward the 235s.

Anyway, I'm looking at purchasing these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCW-98-6783/ from Summit Racing. However, before doing so, I'd like to confirm the 4" backspacing is exactly what the OEM rims have.

Does anyone know for certain? Yes I could pull a wheel (or the full-size spare) off the Pathy and measure the backspacing myself, but one would think that complete OEM wheel specs would be available someplace!

And borninabarn - my layperson response to your query is that you're probably fine going one size wider - ie 265mm section width. I agree 100% with what disallow stated above.

Thanks to anyone who can answer my question!

I got 33s on my 02, but that's with a 2" lift from OME.

Hey,
Someone on this site had this neat tire comparison tool and it seems like alot of different size tires would fit fine under an 02 Pathfinder.Right now I have the 255/65-16 tires and they are 29.1" Height then here are the heights of more sizes
265/75-16=31.6"
245/75-16=30.5"
245/70-16=29.5"
235/65-16=28"
255/70-16=30.1"
So would you say that a person could mount any of these size tires on an R50 and wouldnt have to worry about it rubbing?Another thing is the new set of wheels I got are 16" x 8" is that going to be a problem going from a 16" x 7"? Well here is the link for the tire comparison tool if you didnt see it?

Thanks for your help everyone!

Just my .02 but I dunno if I would trust that. 31.6" seems large for a stock height R50. Maybe someone else can chime if they have done it successfully, but as I said my truck has brand new everything as far as suspension is concerned with a 2" lift and I still had to take the splashguards off to fit 33s. I'm thinking subtract the 2" and then subtract maybe a little more for older suspension that is probably sagging a little from worn struts & shocks and worn rubber spring bushings although I don't know the history of the truck. I would think 30.5 would be safe although you may still have to remove the front splashguards, which is no biggie. As far as tire width, I haven't messed with it on my truck but it would stand to reason that a wider tire would rub sooner than a narrower one. However, im pretty sure you can get tires for your 8" rims that are close to the same width as a wide tire for 7" rims. Call Discount Tire or some other shop to verify.

For tire size I would stay close to a 30" if you don't want to do any trimming. As for the back space I know xterra wheels stock are 5"

The tire size is a fairly common question across Pathy forums. The biggest issue for our R50's is the front strut clearance. Generally, I agree with yellowbug. 30" is about as much as you're going to get away with before you run into clearance issues at the strut.

Regarding wheel width, check your tire mfg's page. They should have a fit guide that says what wheel width the tire will accommodate. For example, I have Firestone destination AT's at 265/75 R16 (31"). My Pathy has a 2" lift and stock wheels. Firestone website says that the tires can fit wheels from 7-9". Here's a link to the Destination AT chart: http://www.firestonetire.com/productdet ... nation_a/t.

When these tires went on new, they did rub at the strut, but not enough to be worried. They just made noise for the first 100+ miles.

Lastly, I think the stock wheel backspace is 4" for 2000-2004 Pathys. Mine is on '04 and is 4", and I'm fairly sure that the one's you've got pictured are too. I'm not positive about the 99.5-01 five-spoke wheels.

If you want larger tires w/o lifting, you can get wheels that have smaller negative backspacing (go from 4" to 3.5" BS) or spacers to pull away from the strut. Yes, that brings other things into play, but those are the joys of modding!!

Hope this helps...

Thanks for all your input guys! I just put my New/Used 16"x 8" Mickey Thompson wheels on and used my tires from my stock wheels that are the 255/65-16 Mich LTXs Until I figure out somehow what size tires to go with that are taller. These wheels have 4"backspacing and have room to go taller but not much wider if any? I would like a small lift 2-3 someday but times are hard right now being disabled and waiting for SSDI that I have paid into my working life. Thanks again !Born

my 2003 had 255/65 16 as stock, I replaced with 255/70 16
On second set now, AT and HT's. Reading above I think this is as big as you can get without rubbing. Stock wheels.
I mainly went bigger because speedo reads fast !!!

99 XE Chilcoot with wide rims;

Mounted light truck BF Goodrich LT31X10.5's about 50K kms ago; there called floaters due to the wide tread; it just had enough clearance on the ft struts; its equivilant to a P265x75's. Tires are good; stiff sidewalls; tread hums a bit on the highway;

I got LTs as Im towing a loaded trailer on occasion. on a 1-10 I'd give them a 8; my big dissapointment is there'r soft and ware faster then expected; but there mountain winter off road rated too ... so what da ya expect.
