1993 XE clutch job

Postby Jmoor85 » Mon Aug 24, 2015 12:02 pm

So I need to replace the clutch in my grandpas 93 XE 4x4. Looks like it is a 10hr job. What else should I be looking to replace/fix while in up in there? My uncle says I should replace the rear seal also. Which one would he be referring to?

Is there a good link on here of someone who already did it and has advice? Anyone on here in the Sacramento CA area who wants to help?

Is this the correct part?

He's referring to the rear main crank seal; I also run a bead of RTV silicone around the rear lip seal of the oil pan. Both of these are common oil leaks on VG engines. You'll need to remove the crossmember with the torsion bars, which affects the ride height. Measure the ride height before removing the tension on the torsion bars. When all is done, have an alignment performed.

Okay cool. Any special tools needed? Can the rear main deal be replaced from the outside? Only time I have changed one was on my 78 Trans Am. I was also replacing the clutch but I had to actually tear it all apart to get in there.

Good advice I ride height. Thanks

I would recommend a transmission jack if you don't already have one. The transmission/transfer case assembly is very heavy. Soak the bolts well with rust penetrant, especially on the exhaust, part of which will need to be removed and you may need a torch to heat some of the exhaust bolts/nuts to remove them (or torch them off, depending how rusty). If you are draining the gear oil or transfer case oil, I would recommend a transfer pump to refill them; you can usually get an inexpensive one for $20 or less from places like Harbor Freight. You may also need some new flange gaskets for the exhaust. You can probably fine R&R instructions in the free repair guides at Autozone.com if you don't have a manual; you'll need to register an e-mail to access them. As far as "special tools," the alignment tool for the clutch should come in the kit. You'll need a puller for the pilot bushing.

Very good stuff. Sounds like you are very familiar with these cars. Is the clutch in eBay link the right one?

Went and trailered the truck home tonight. Pretty excited about it. I'll have to post some pics soon.

I'm a former Nissan Master Tech who worked for Nissan for 16 years, so I've worked on a few Nissans, you could say.

According to the ad, it's the right kit. One note: you'll need a press to remove/install the clutch release bearing (a.k.a. "thowout bearing") from/to the clutch release sleeve.

Dang. Sucks you aren't closer to me. I'd have you check over this thing and let me know what you think I need to do and what I can wait on. Sounds like you run this site too?
