1996 Pathfinder Air conditioner blowing warm air

Postby Panhead » Mon Jun 27, 2016 1:01 pm

Hi,

I'm new to the forum, so if I make a mistake, sorry.

Anyway, I have a 1996 Pathfinder and the air conditioner just blows warm air. I have done the following.

Checked fuse and relay, they both seem to be okay.
Added coolant on the low side.
Compressor does not seem to turn on.

Is there a way to check the compressor? I tapped the clutch with a hammer to see if it was stuck. That didn't do anything. I'm hopping that I don't have a bad compressor, because I don't want to replace it.

Any help is needed, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Thanks in advance.

You can jump the clutch to see if it engages and runs the compressor, as a quick test. If you don't know what you are doing nor have pressure gauges for an R-134 system, there may not be a whole lot you can do outside of taking it to a shop for diagnosis/repair. If the freon level is too low, the pressure switch will not allow the compressor to engage by opening the circuit to it. If you want to try doing some circuit checks, then I recommend you get a factory service manual for your vehicle and follow the symptom charts for your problem in the Heating and Air Conditioning section to the appropriate test procedures.
