2005 Pathfinder HID Ballast Mount

Postby falcondrgn » Tue Nov 18, 2008 12:58 am

Hello,

For those that have a HID plug and play kit, I was wondering where you guys mounted the ballast for 05 and up pathfinders. And does anyone know if our stock wiring harness for the 9007 bulbs is capable of handling the initial ignition of the ballast being that it can double up to 70 watts before cooling down to 35watts. If so, would a wire harness kit that is directly connected to the battery help take some of the stress off the stock headlight harness. Thanks so much in advance.

[soapbox]
HID plug and play kits are a waste of money. HID bulbs are not designed to work in halogen reflectors. the HID bulbs are the wrong length, and end up scattering light all over the place. sure, they look brighter, but you are probably going to get less light where you want it (on the road ahead of you). plus, you are going to piss off all the drivers coming toward you b/c your headlights are scattering light every which-way. i see it every night i drive... all the stupid honda civics with their "HID" headlights.
[/soapbox]

now that thats taken care of. inrush current doesn't last too long. it *shouldn't* be a problem. but if you are worried, run a relay switched wire from the battery. what size is the wire in the stock harness?

I guess thats y i dont see any r51's out there with HID lights. After testing my HIDs in the stock housing the glare isnt that bad and you dont get that highbeam look as well. But regardless I am still getting the projectors for my truck. Do you know the size of wire for the stock headlight harness? Thanks

from my experience from other vehicles, the original wires should be sufficient or else the fuse will blow.

HID's in reflector housings are a waste of money and just simply look bad.

if you are going to put the HID's in the factory housings, make sure that the housings can take the heat being put out from the bulbs. you dont want your housings to melt on you.

HID's are best in projectors. one bad side of the projectors are that they are not DOT approved.

if you get an inspector that know's his stuff he wont pass you.

Thanks for the advice, luckily I live in NYC and the inspectors here just want your money and could really care less if you have an exhaust, hids, etc. I know some of my friends in other states have mentioned the inspection process is a pain in the ass especially since they work for the state, but in nyc, any mechanic can perform an inspection as long as they have the machine. Thanks again for the advice!

oh one more thing...

usually the aftermarket makers of the projector housings usually have a place to screw in the ballast onto the housing itself.

if not you can do what I did in my other car... velcro it to the inside of the bumper!

it does for my bimmer's fogs...

everytime i change the oil i reposition it, but it holds pretty well!

i used one piece on each ballast. if you plan to do any bumpy driving in the Pathfinder i'd use 5 squares...
