2006 Pathy bad timing chain?

So after reading on here a bit, I think I have the bad secondary timing chain. Here is a video I took. I'm hoping you guys can tell if this is the timing chain whine. I do know I need to replace the fan clutch.

I'm assuming thats the whine. I've got a quote to replace the timing chains, guides, tensioners and water pump for 1750.00. Seems like a decent quote. The stealership quoted "maybe around 1500$" and another quoted 4200$$$ neither included a firm price and the water pump.

The place that quoted you $4,200.00 sounds like they do not really want the job. Quoting it so high they hope you will go away! .. From what I read $1,500-$2,000.00 sounds good. And yes change that water pump just makes no sense not to.

Most have posted on here that they only get this sound when the engine is cold. I get it non stop all day. I seems to quiet down a little but that it.

It depends how far the chain has cut through the tensioner "feet." Eventually it will get to the point where it it just riding across the steel plunger of the tensioner and at that point it will be the loudest and you'll hear it all the time.

So I've found a tech from a shop that is willing to do the work on the side for around 400$ plus parts. I've used the service bulletin NTB07-042 to get a list of parts from coutesyparts.com including the water pump,and fan clutch. My question is, should I do this or get one of the many timing chain kits online that price out a lot less? Is there a better brand for these items?

In addition to the TSB parts, I would get the primary timing chain and primary timing chain tensioner. I would use Permatex Ultra Grey Rigid High-Torque RTV for the cover rather than the Nissan sealant. It's just as good but easier to apply.

I haven't heard of any problems with the aftermarket kits. From my experience, it's rare to find any kind of wear on the timing chain guides.
For the water pump, aftermarket is fine. I was able to get a Hitachi water pump through Advance Auto Parts and 30% off with code "TRT30," but they don't always stock it. Rockauto.com has a number of different brands.
As far as the fan clutch, stick with genuine Nissan.

I have an 06 with 150k miles on it. I dont hear that noise at idle; mine just makes a noise like electrical interference when RPM's increase.

One last question, I'm trying to make this job easier on the mechanic that is going to do this job for me. I'm only going to be paying about 400$ for his labor, and that includes all, 3 chains, guides, tensioners, seals the water pump, and fan clutch. How can I locate the two tools that make this job easier? can you help me find them? or give me the tools names?

You don't really need the special tool to install the plastic feet on the upper tensioners. I use a set of channel locks with summer rubber Robo-grip plier covers over the ends to prevent marring the plastic, but you can use the pliers with a rag, instead. FYI, if you are getting the kit with the upper tensioners, there's a lot more work involved to replace the upper tensioners as opposed to just replacing the upper tensioner feet. To replace the whole tensioner, you have to remove the rear timing cover, as well.
The other tool is the flywheel stopper, or ring gear tool, J-48761. This is made by Kent-Moore tools and saves a lot of work on the job. Once again, you can do the job without this special tool, but one would need to remove the upper plenum and both valve covers.

This job must be a bear! I know 3 mechanics that do work on the side and none of them are interested in doing the job! Since you live nearby SMJ999smj, can you possibly recommend anyone? I may just need to bite the bullet and take the 1800$ bid. 1800 may not be the worst price.

I don't know of anybody in the Midlothian area. I used to do work on the side, but my friend just closed his shop for business so I have no place to do it.

So I've got it in the shop now. It sat for 3 weeks waiting on them to get time to do it. For the price I'm paying, I'd wait 6 months!! But wouldn't you know it has warmed up and now the only noise you can hear is the fan since my fan clutch is dead as well. I played them the video I made and the tech agreed it's probably the chains. I hope that was the issue.

If you replace the fan clutch, stick with genuine Nissan. Most of the aftermarkets are garbage.
