87 Pathfinder runs rough when hot

Postby rs1953 » Wed Mar 04, 2015 2:34 pm

Hey everyone! I am new to the forum. I am the proud owner of an 87 Pathfinder. When it's cold it starts like a champ and runs fine as long as it is cold outside (below 30 degrees). But if it is warm out as soon as the engine warms up it starts running hot, sounds like it's out of timing and will not restart until it cools off. (The temp guage just shows it running a little higher than normal, but not to the overheating point.) The exhaust looks like it may be running a bit rich, but it does that all the time. I have checked/replaced all the vacuum lines, replaced the oxygen sensor, the thermostat and the manifold sensor. I also replaced the coil and modulator in an unrelated starting problem. One of my neighbors suggested a head gasket problem but there are no signs of milkiness in the oil or anything. Help! Any and all suggestions/ideas are appreciated! Thank you!

It sounds like you need a new distributor. When it won't start, check for lack of spark.
