96 Pathy tire carrier

Postby theexbrit » Tue Nov 08, 2011 10:14 am

Hi all, I have a 1996 Pathy with the spare wheel carrier underneath, but it also has all the bolt holes on the rear passenger side quarter panel & the license plate holder is offset to the drivers side, so it looks like it could have both the swing out carrier & the existing underneath carrier. I got a good deal on a 1991 swing out tire carrier, but will this fit on the 96 using the existing bolt holes.
Also, will it be too wide & hit the license holder? I'll get a photo up here soon so that you can see what I mean about the license plate holder & bolt holes.

Thanks.

Update

Sorry to say, no it won't fit. It's strange because I just watched an ad for a 1996 Pathy & it had a swing away carrier! My R50 has all the mount holes & the catches, etc, on the body but I can't find any reference to a swing away carrier for this year model. Everything is about the underneath tire carrier. I'm going to try a Nissan dealer tomorrow & see if they did make some 1996 models with the swing away carrier. It seems strange that all the mounting hardware would be there if they didn't make a swing away carrier for that year. My only other choice is to do some heavy modding on the 1991 carrier & try to make it work.

tire carrier

I posted this before. In town, on street parking is a pain getting groceries, etc out. I ended up strapping my spare inside to the floor hooks and removing the swing mount. Since I teach skiing and play in snow a lot I am not that interested in having the spare down below in the deep snow, also.

I was thinking that it might be a pain in the butt having to move the spare each time I wanted to open the tail gate. I might rethink my options.

I saw an ad for a 96 with the swing out tire carrier too & also Nissanpartszone.com have a swing out carrier for the 96 listed or at least all the brackets, bolt,s etc. maybe not the actual carrier but that could be fabricated with steel I guess. It's getting the correct brackets for the body that's important. I was thinking of putting a couple of jerrycans on it instead of a tire & maybe mount the tire on the aftermarket safari roof rack. There's a roof rack mount available.
