well you guys are a ton of help. after reading a bunch on drilled/slotted, and since I do some moderate water crossings and expo wheeling adventures I chose to go with a solid rotor and ordered Raybestos Advanced Tech pads and rotors from Amazon. I will update this thread after fitment.
Yes, followup with how they work out. There are some folks around here that have tried other types of pads/rotors but I don't see too much talk on the subject. I'm not a fan of slotted/drilled either for anything that's not a high performance vehicle that will be driven accordingly.
I've had very good luck with the OEM pads/rotors....but they're pricey. At least $100 more for just the fronts than the examples you're picking up from Amazon.
I like the Akebono ACT ceramic pads which I got from Rockauto.com. They are half the price of the genuine Nissan pads, perform as well if not better, come with the hardware and shims and are quiet. Akebono has been a supplier of brake pads and shoes to Nissan for decades. I used a set of Wagner rotors with them. The genuine Nissan replacement pads that I have on my 06 LE continue to have a low speed squeel. I have cleaned and lubed them once already, which lasted about two months. I've used the Raybestos Professional Series and Advanced Technology pads on other vehicles with no complaints and they perform well.
I tried the slotted rotors on a previous vehicle and swore never to do that again. Bad experience all around, and that was using highly rated rotors and pads. I'll probably get mine done this summer & have the Akebono in mind as well, although I'd love to hear from what others are running.
got the new brakes and rotors installed today, 2 hours for all four corners.
work great, had 87k on my originals and 2 pads were within 1/16th of metal, so I was just in time. Nothing to it, had my boy out there helping me. I highly recommend the Raybestos, stops great.
My '90 FJ62 trail beater/critter gitter. 14" of travel in all four corners.
I hope you corrected the pad installment in the third pick down. Notice on the bottom pad retainer the spring tab isn't positioned under the end of the brake pad like it's supposed to be. Also, Molykote 7349, which is a copper impregnated high temp paste, should be installed on the pad retainers where the ends of the brake pads contact.
No...I'm a former Nissan Master Technician. I worked for Nissan from 1985 through 2003, minus a couple of years when I did some tractor trailer driving and a year as an indpendant mechanical inspector for various warranty companies.
The Molykote grease is listed in a TSB released for brake squeek on R51 Pathfinders, as well as other models. Prior to that, Nissan used to have "PBC grease" which was another copper impregnated grease that used on their brake hardware for years.
I don't pop in all that often but would add I've been very impressed with the EBC green stuff pads. They are designed such that you don't end up with horrid black pad dust all over your rims. 12 months and I can hardly notice any brake dust at wash time where as prior to the change the OEM Nissan Pads were peppering the rims after a few miles.
