Brakes / drive shaft support / Whining noise (tranny???)

Postby Bens_94_Pathfinder » Wed Jun 19, 2013 7:58 pm

Hello!!!!

I'm super excited to say that I bought by first car! Its a beat to shit 94 Pathfinder! Its a VG30 2wd 5 speed manual 4 door with a broken odo that reads 189000. Today I replaced alternator/fan belt and added motor oil and coolant. I will be replacing the front sway bar bushings tomorrow because oil leaked all over the front right one and ruined it.

The drive shaft support/bushing needs to be replaced also it appears to be missing entirely. I can't afford to replace it yet so it will have to wait. How important is this part to the function of the driveshaft?

OK now for the whining noise. I have a feeling its somewhere between the crank and the front of the tranny. It only happens when it is gear. It also appears to be consistent with the engine revvs and not the wheel speed. Any suggestions here?

Thanks for your time!!!!!!

Driveshaft support is very important.

The whine could be either the transmission, or perhaps a power steering pump?

Definitely going to be replacing that support ASAP then.

I would really like to isolate the whining noise so I can fix the problem. I will be driving around today and I will try to see if the whining gets louder when steering or when its in a specific gear or what not.

If I could venture a guess as to what it may be at the moment I would say pilot bearing next to the clutch plate and flywheel. It appears to make the noise only when it is in gear and while higher than 2k-2.5k rpm. It only happens when in gear and changes with engine speed not wheel speed. As soon as I do more testing I'll post.

I have a 95 five speed 2x4.
It has a loud whine/"waaaahhhh" noise in every gear but 4th. Its louder and more intense the greater the load. Doesnt do it in nuetral/when clutch is engaged/ when coasting.

it has 268k on it.
whats going on here?

Perhaps did the timing belt get changed recently ? If it was changed and not tensioned correctly and is to tight it will whine like hell with rpms
