Postby cfenton » Mon May 05, 2008 1:20 pm

It seems by all my postings, I am quite busy replacing parts on my truck. LOL. If anyone is familiar with replacing cam sensors, could they please pass some information my way. It'll be my first & hopefully my last. Even pictures????? Thanks a bunch!!!!!

This is from the manual.

The camshaft position sensor (PHASE) is located on the engine
front cover facing the camshaft sprocket. It detects the cylinder No.
signal.
The sensor consists of a permanent magnet, core and coil.
When engine is running, the gap between the sensor and the
camshaft sprocket will periodically change. Permeability near the
sensor also changes.
Due to the permeability change, the magnetic flux near the core is
changed. Therefore, the voltage signal generated in the coil is
changed.
The ECM receives the voltage signal and detects the cylinder No.
signal.

Also, if you measure the resistance, it should be 1440-1760 for a Hatachi make and 2090-2550 for Mitsubishi make. That will prove if the sensor is actually bad.

How many miles do you have on your truck?

Miles on truck 170. Thanks for the input. Dealer says they'll need to be replaced soon...whats soon? Symptoms?

I'm not sure if it will act like my old grand cherokee did or not, but it would stall intermittantly. Then would start back up on it's own most of the time. If the crankshaft sensor goes, then it won't start. I had that combo and it took a little while to figure out. The best way is to get a meter and measure the resistance. Hope this helps.

cam sensors

Postby vq35 » Mon Jul 27, 2009 9:10 pm

there are 2 cam sensors which apparently go bad together or soon after so best to replace BOTH passenger/driver side - you can do it yourself however if you are not handy with doing that type of stuff then I'd purchase the parts and have a mechanic do it - this will trigger the check engine light and will go off after a few drive cycles of replacement - mine were on for months before replacement as it had no affect on drivability but the CEL remains on -

next thing to watch for is the MAF sensor (600+@dealer) however many have successfully replaced with cheaper one from the 3.0 maxima from 2001 and it fits n worked for me for less than 100

good trux otherwise - last ones built in japan
