Sounds "better" is subjective to what you are wanting in terms of sound. I went with the Magnaflow #12580 and have been pretty happy with the sound, but it does take some welding to get in installed. An exhaust shop would have no problem, however. It sounds even better since I installed Doug Thorley shortie headers and B-pipes, but they may not be legal except for off-road use depending on where you live. CARB certification is pending for the headers, currently. I have a thread on the muffler install. I need to update the thread for the headers and B-pipes, but just haven't had much time, lately. Here's the link:

exhaust

The #12580 and chopping the Y-Pipe out is the best, cheap solution to free up the exhaust and change the sound. At idle, the sound isn't much different, but under throttle I find the sound to be exactly what I'm looking for in this vehicle. I left the stock rear tailpipe/resonator in place as well.

Yes, you definitely want to have a tailpipe resonator or it will sound "raspy."

Ive got a flowmaster super 44 on mine and it sounds like a beast, tailpipe resonator also cut off and no rasp at all, just clean agressive sound.

Nice to know. I was looking up YouTube videos of the sounds of some mufflers but most are Frontiers and I'm not sure if that's completely accurate to the Pathfinder sound. I know the common one around here is the Magnaflow, but I do want a more aggressive, louder sound.

If you want agressive the super 44 is the way to go, you will not be dissapointed. Actually before i bought it i did watch a video with one on a fontier also and it pretty much resembles that if not, better. But sound is always much better in person, videos dont capture it so well

Mine got noticeable louder when I removed the post-converters and replaced them with Doug Thorley mid-pipes. This was after replacing the stock muffler with the Magnaflow. However, the mid-pipes are technically for "off-road" use, so it will depend how strict your state inspection is as to whether you should go that route.

I have doug Thornley long tubes, b pipes and Gibson cat back, the "rasp" was awful so I pulled the b pipes and put the stock rear cats back in which helped the "rasp" it's still there but not nearly as bad. But I still don't care for the drone of the Gibson muffler. My question is how much better is the magnaflow in terms of overall drone and quietness? At this point I'm looking for something that is nice and quiet under normal conditions with some growl under full throttle. Also who would you recommend for aftermarket resonator?

One of the things I mentioned in my thread of mods is that if you want a quiet exhaust, then stick with the factory muffler. The Magnaflow does create a "drone" noise, which does improve some after some miles are put on it and it breaks-in, but it's still there. I used the shorty headers with the factory, upstream converters and deleted the rear cats with the Thorley B-pipes. Since my pipes were in good shape, I kept the factory tail pipe and resonator (or "post muffler"). I can't really tell you how much difference in noise there is between what I did and the Gibson exhaust without having both to compare.
As far as resonators, Vibrant, I've heard, makes pretty good ones. Most of my info came from searching through the Xterra and Frontier forums, as there's a lot more activity when it comes to performance mods than here.

Thanks for the info. Maybe you've mentioned this but why did you go with the shorties and delete the front cats as opposed to longtubes and keeping the rear cats?
