Extended Warranty advice

Postby .moO^. » Mon Jan 24, 2011 10:12 am

Hi,

New to the board and need some advice from fellow enthusiast/professionals. My 2006 Pathfinder is currently running close to 52k miles and I'm in the market for an extended warranty. After lurking around on the forum, it appears Nissan's Security Plus Gold or Gold Preferred is the best options out there (from Nissan). However, I've called several local dealership requesting for quote so far only 1 return my call and suggested my car is not qualified for it.

That being said, any one have suggestions on what's a good extended warranty I should go with? 3rd party or Nissan? Which package from Nissan is good? Thanks

I have an 08 and when I bought it, I added the 7 year 100K mile to it... It will be good through 2015.

I am not sure what the requirements are for it. I know there are several ppl on here that have the 3rd party ones who can chime in.

Welcome by the way!

Thanks!

Do you know when your in service date is? I mean, I assume you bought an 08' and bought the extended warranty at the same time, but when does your extended warranty start?

EDIT: Which dealership in Indiana did you get it from?

Usually you can't add a OEM (nissan) warranty if it's not currently within the factory warranty. Usually that requires it be within the B2B (3/36 warranty) but I'm not sure what Nissan requires. You may be able to add a powertrain warranty assuming you're still within the original 5/60.

IMHO, they're bad investments as the cost will be EASILY a couple grand, probably more. You can do a lot of work for that kind of coin.

I would never in a million years buy a non-manufacturer warranty. It wasn't that long ago there were several of them that went out of business and then you are SOL.

Thanks Skinny. I was just hoping not to pay the warranty service and whatever issues comes up that's manufacturer's fault they'll take care of it. I have extended warranty on my other infiniti which I'm quite satisfy with it; hence, they replaced my tranny not long ago due to some failure they have identified.

I prefer manufacturer warranty as well but just need to find the right one.

Buyer beware.

the "extended warranties" from third party companies are nothing more the "service contracts". I have heard many, many, many bad experience stories about them. Both warranty side and mechanic side. mechanics cringe because they don't want to deal with the companies because they hassle them on what, how, and when and will only pay a certain amount. Warranty companies tell their clients its "wear and tear" and won't pay for it, deductible is too high, vehicle owner has to pay the mechanic and then get reimbursed by the warranty company.

All kinds of problems.

Many mechanics won't deal with them. Our Nissan dealer will not deal with any extended warranty companies. If you want Nissan to work on your vehicle, you pay then get reimbursed by the warranty company.

With that said... My wife bought an extended warranty from Zurich and it was awesome. In fact, it was the only Extended warranty the service manager would accept. I mean... My wife's policy with Zurich was the last policy he would deal with. He turned everyone else away. Now... My wife is a total fox and can make mince meat out of most men but... Zurich NEVER hassled the dealer, they just paid right over the phone. She was towed twice, they have a 24/7 number to call and we had a tow truck at the location within 45 minutes.

Look into Zurich as a 3rd party one if you think you need it.

The way I look at it is what's covered with the factory warranty. Drive train has been extended to 100k, radiator has been extended to 80k. maybe a head gasket could go, etc....

But... all in all are you going to spend 2-3k in repairs over the next 4 years? If you think so and don't mind the hassle you may get from your dealer and the warranty company go for it. I just don't have the temper to deal with it. My luck, I buy the warranty and then they won't pay to have it fixed, or they send my tranny mechanic a tranny from the shop they deal with, I got to wait 4 weeks for it to come in, then once its fixed, the tranny is a POS and now I am dealing with my mechanic, Nissan, and the warranty.

F that... if something goes wrong, i will pay out of pocket or fight the dealer. At lest then I know its going to get fixed immediately.

I have AAA so if I need a tow, I call them.

Its all what you want.

I say look into Zurich if you are set on buying one though for peace of mind.

Thanks! I will look into Zurich.

Anybody have experience in Security +Plus Pre-owned preferred warranty from nissan? They're saying due to the mileage and age of the car I'm only qualified for this. Covers 1440 components but don't have the details.

Thanks
