Mine (timing chains and tensioner) was covered under the powertrain warranty -- I was a little over 59k miles and it was covered. Shouldnt that work for your truck?
i hope so i took it to Cerritos nissan in southern california, the mechanic herd the noise and he drove it and said he herd it but then they wouldn't fix it because the service manager couldn't replicate it.

A. Make sure you save the documentation showing you complained of the problem and the dealer refused to repair it. You may need this later if the tensioner fails and you need a new engine.

B. It's hard to understand why a dealer wouldn't perform a necessary repair under warranty, as they are fully reimbursed by Nissan for the cost of the parts plus time. Maybe the noise is from another cause?

C. Bring the truck to another dealer. Warranty work can be done by any dealer and you will find wide differences in quality, price and customer service at different dealers.

Same thing just happened to me at 26k. Of course this had to happen when I filled up in Death Valley. Fortunately I know exactly when & where to fill up between there and SLC. I'm taking it in tomorrow to have them fix it, assuming I don't run out of gas in the meantime.

EDIT: double whammy. It ended up being the fuel sending unit (code P0463) and the evap canister vent control valve (code P0448). Just about $900 worth of parts and labor, thankfully all covered under warranty.

p0463 and t-chain

Do the fuel sender repair yourself, i can guide anyone that needs help.

DO NOT try to do the chain yourself. You have about 0% chance of success. The repair is quite specific. The motor is interference. The bolts and sealing surfaces are finicky. The manual does NOT have the info you need.

I've done lots of both repairs.

Second item, more critical, I started hearing a high pitched whining noise coming from the engine. Not real bad, but definitely a different than normal sound. Took it in to the dealer and they said it was the timing chain and tensioners going bad. Here is the description from the service ticket:
“Check engine whining noise from in the timing chain area. Upper timining chain tensioners worn and making whining noise. Replace secondary timing chains and tensioners.”
This was covered under the power train warranty, so didn’t cost me anything –but they said it was a $2500 repair.

So, all is fixed and working well. Anyone have similar problems?
i have an 06 Path and i have been having that same issue. I go to start my path in the morning and it sounds really bad. But then when it warms up a bit it's not so bad......i figured it had to do with the belts but now that i am reading this it all makes sense. I will have the dealer look at it soon since i will be coming up on my 60k before long.

The factory Nissan B2B and Powertrain warranties apply regardless of how many owners the vehicle has had. As long as you are within the time and mileage limits, you have coverage.

I had mine checked out today while i was getting my oil changed and they said that the timing chain was fine. I told them that when starting it up in the morning it sounds like crap and he of course told me that "In order to replicate the issue we would have to leave it over night." This is our only mode of transportation so i will have to wait a little longer.

NTB06-072a vs NTB07-042a

Postby goblue90 » Wed May 20, 2009 10:15 am

I dropped off my 2005 Pathfinder at the dealership yesterday afternoon to get an oil change and to look into the squealing from the auto-tensioner. From what I've been able to find on the internet (clubfrontier.org, frontierboard.com, nissanpath.com, and nissanhelp.com) is that there are two separate TSBs for similar noises:

NTB06-072a is for "Drive Belt Noise" that involves the drive belt and auto-tensioner. These parts are apparently not covered under the powertrain warranty, but are covered by your vehicle's 3 year/36,000 warranty.

NTB07-042a is for "Buzzing/Whining Noise From Timing Chain Area" that involves secondary timing chains and both timing chain tensioners. It looks like service related to this TSB should be covered under Nissan's 5 year/50,000 powertrain warranty (according to my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder warrantly booklet, "timing chains and tensioners" are covered).

Based on what others have reported and what the dealership mentioned to me over the phone, replacing the auto-tensioner and drive belt costs approximately $250 to $300. Based on what I've read online, repair costs associated with the latter TSB is approximately $2,500.

Luckily the noise I've been hearing is due to my auto-tensioner and not the timing chains.
