Grille guards?

Postby tsmoyer13 » Wed Dec 22, 2010 6:26 pm

What kind of grille guard does everyone have? What are the pros and cons of the different ones?

It would probably help to know your goal. I've never installed one on a typical road vehicle because in order to provide adequate protection they have to be very heavy and bolted into multiple locations. The typical bars that bolt to a couple spots underneath won't provide any protection

Pros: Good for very light duty, mounting lights, looks tough.

Cons: Causes lots of damage during accident, extra weight, can't do much with it.

If you really need the protection a custom steel bumper is the only way to go.

I fitted one made by Aires - it is a half bar only as high as the top of the fender, it is 3 inch stainless steel with 2 lamp mounting holes and a front brush guard.

I accept that it will offer no additional heavy impact protection and in fact might be worse than nothing. I fitted it to deflect wild turkey and other small animals that might stray into my path. I lost a front fender and grill last year with a wild turkey - and it didn't even have the good grace to die and become food.

It looks good as well, didn't cost much I think $199 all in - certainly would not have bought at big money.

It is mostly going to be for looks and for deflecting deer on the way home at night after work. I'm thinking something in black that covers the headlights as well.

It will do a ton of damage "deflecting" deer. We have 200# white-tails around here and while I'd like to have a bar for some of the smaller game....deer will end up pounding the bar into other parts. Especially the kind that wrap over the headlights. With the right hit a deer will glance off the headlights/fenders and not do a lot of damage. The bar will get bent back into the headlights/fender/hood/grille and really tear things up.

the only thing that will deflect deer is gunfie.

I went for the smaller one to protect against small road kill, deer, moose etc just hope it goes over not through.

mind you there is a lot of eating if you get one.

look out for reindeer at this time of years- Ho Ho Ho

Not sure who makes it as it came with the vehicle, but most of them are the same. Mine has an extra bracket for the winch to sit in and mount to the frame.

Glad to see you made it over here. I've seen a lot of different grille guards but none with the winch provision. If you get a chance, could you look closer and see if you can see the mfg? Also, I'd like to see how it is attached underneath if you have any pics of that. Thanks.

^ Sure will. The wife has it at the gym right now, but I'll try and take some pics either tonight when she comes back or tomorrow in the daylight.

So I looked all over the brush guard for who makes it and found a tag, but couldn't tell who made it. Here are some pictures of how the brush guard is mounted and also how the winch mounts. Hope this helps.

that looks like an oem brush guard from nissan. I had one on my 06 pathfinder that was identical (minus the winch and winch platform) but it had the same mounting points and had the same holes the winch support bolts to.

I've looked and looked lately for another one but have had no luck. if anyone knows where to pick them up i would be interested.

You looking for an OEM brush guard? Do they not make them any more?

i don't think Nissan has ever marketed an OEM brush guard for the R51s (at least not in the U.S.)
