hitch question

Postby webmastir » Wed Apr 21, 2010 9:29 am

ok so im a little confused as to what i'd need, maybe?

my 4x2 '06 path se came with the towing package: typical... 600lbs tongue/6000lbs tow. i need to buy the ball hitch "addon" or whatever, right? where would i buy something like that? which one would i need? i'm soon to be towing a ~3500+lbs boat & trying to find out the 'hitch' addon i need.

let me know if im making no sense. thanks

Pepboys, Auto-Zone, Napa. just to name a few. Or www.summitracing.com , www.Jegs.com , www.cabels.com , www.basspro.com

You going to need a 2" male recever, cross pin, and the correct size ball.
I would pay the extra $ for a class 3 and up good up to 12k lbs.

One thing to consider is the drop on the hitch insert. Pathfinder hitches sit high & it's best to have the boat & trailer level when towing.
For towing my boat I have a 3" drop on my hitch.
The best places to get an insert is Napa, Home depot ( in the tool rental place) or a boat shop.

They are typically called a "ball mount".

Getting everything matched up is more important than brand. Like others have said, you need to get the right "drop" to have your trailer level. Somewhere like e-trailer may have a section to tell you how to measure this. I have a 4" drop to tow my tent trailer level with the PF. My Wagoneer and S10 only needed a 2" drop.

Assuming you need a 2" ball(there is also 1 3/4" and 2 5/16"), there will be a hole in the ball mount that is typically 3/4", 1", or 1 1/4". Get a ball that has the same size shank as the hole(that sounds bad as a write this). Typically 3/4" is 3500lbs., 1" is 5000-6000lbs., and 1 1/4 is 8000-10,000lbs. You might as well get a size or two heavier than you need as you will probably have this longer than the PF. I have two different sizes and I've had them now for four different tow vehicles.
