lights behind the grill

Postby NYPathfinder » Sat Jul 23, 2011 9:40 pm

I removed my white rhino light bar and mounted the two hella 500's behind the grill. It wasn't as easy as i thought it would be. Not to much room to work with. But I like the end result and the lights fit perfect after measuring twice and drilling once. They currently had HID 3k bulbs in them but that will be changing once my new hellas come in the mail. The current hellas, the inside reflector is covered in mud from when i tried to sink my truck going through a puddle that went over my hood. Let me know what you think

They look nice. Monitor your temp guage and let me us know if you have any adverse effects from the lights blocking the radiator.

I've had the lights mounted for about 2 weeks now.Havent noticed any temp difference at all. Its been over 100deg the last two days and in the 80s before that.

Nice. That's good to hear. How is the light output? Does the plastic from the grill mess with the brightness/display?

There actually pretty bright. The wire mesh grill from what i can tell really doesn't block much if any light from shining through. Althought with the stock grill im sure the light output wouldn't be that good.

Would you have been able to mount them towards the outside, closer to the headlamp?

By the way, the black rims, and roof rack look great. Nice looking Pathfinder.

Thanks. I could have out them further apart but I didn't want to block the trans cooler anymore then I had to. Also with the size of the lights I couldn't go to much further otherwise the grill would start blocking the lights. I was debating doing something similar to this guy on clubfrontier.

Lights aren't large enough to have any adverse effect on cooling. The wire mesh grill from what I can tell really doesn't block much if any light from shining through.

Those look nice! I like the behind the grill look-they seem pretty protected that way. Any other shots showing what kind of bracket you used, aside from the photo that shows them installed? Or a link to a Frontier thread that shows this?

I like the look of the lights below. Everything is clean & just looks like the lights are part of the car.

Heres one of the threads: If you search "lights behind the grill" a few thread will pop up.
http://www.clubfrontier.org/forums/f10/ ... ill-42018/

I will pop the grill off and take some pics of how i have it mounted. You will notice in that thread he didnt have a trans cooler so he has more room to mount the lights. Its an L bracket that got bolted to the radiator support and then bolted a piece of steel plate across the bottom of that L bracket.. measuerd the lights and drilled into the flat piece of steel and then mounted the lights.Took it all back apart and painted it black so it didnt stick out behind the grill

Thanks for the links. The various Frontier threads have me wanting to do this mod now. We'll see. I ordered a pair of the Hella FF75 last night with a cheapo HID ddmtuning kit, so if that doesn't provide the light I want, then I'll be doing the grill & lights behind grill mods.

no problem. Where are you mounting the lights? what K bulb are you using? and what kind of lighting are you looking for? long range? or just to brighten up whats right in front of you? I've been using ddm kits for a few years now. Have them on my headlights and fogs for the past year on my pathy. The ballasts for my fogs are covered in dirt/mud. They have been submerged in water quite a few times and still have no problems. My current hellas have a ddm kit. Ill have pics of how i have them mounted tomorrow when i pull thr grill off.

So is your grill aftermarket or did you just paint over the chrome? I hate all the chrome on mine.
