Looking at 2002 Pathfinder with Odometer Issues

I am potentially looking at a 2002 Pathfinder LE with a randomly functioning thousandth display on the instrument panel. The seller claims the mileage is correct. I was wondering if it is an isolated problem with the display or if it was tampered with to alter the mileage. I don't know how the actual mileage is stored in the Pathfinder and if I could just purchase a new display and have the correct mileage appear. Thanks in advance
