Custom Exhaust

Postby socal4x » Fri Feb 27, 2009 11:39 am

This topic hasn't been covered in a while...

What custom exhaust or mufflers are you all running...Gibson, etc.? Clamp on, welded, muffler only, or???

I know there isn't much available out there of our rigs, but just checking...also since the new V8 has been out for a while....

I tested the Gibson for Nissan Sport Magazine and it was worse than stock. Went back to stock, then ripped out the stock center muffler and heinous Y-pipe and replaced it with a 2-1 Spintech, sound is great and power is excellent as well (I haven't honestly Dyno'ed it, but seat-of-the-pants dyno definitely shows it better than Gibson). Don't know if there are other cat-back systems on the market now...

Which model 2-1 Spintech did you use?

http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spintec ... &diagram=6

I actually used the one with the 2.5" out, 'cause I tried hooking it up to the 2.5" tail section of my ill-fated Gibson Exhaust http://www.thenissanpath.com/viewtopic. ... 9&start=15. If building from scratch better to use the dual 2.25 to single 2.25 I linked above, it'll mate up better.

So you just had two extensions fabricated to replace the Y-Pipe and connect to the two inlet ports on the muffler?

They problem I had was with resonance...the inside of the cab was vibrating like crazy!

Exactly, two new extensions from the cats to the muffler inlets.

The Gibson did have crazy loud resonance, it was the lamest system I've ever worked with, really.

Sorry to hear you guys having bad luck with the Gibson system... I have one of the first ones made and have had any problems at all... I did redo the rubber sound damper and static/ground cable off of the OEM tailpipe and attached it to the Gibson and have had no resonance/vibration issues... Just my 2 cents worth............. Sounds like custom may be the way to go.

Magnaflow offers a system for the Xterra and Frontier...I emailed them...

The systems should be very similar, right?

Hey guys, I'm new here, but have read a long time on this site regarding this exhaust set up. The only guys around me in Bayonne, NJ that can weld up a custom exhaust is Meineke. Now I'm not crapping on them, but are these shops competent enough to weld a custom Y Pipe and attach a magnaflow catback system or should I be looking for a real performance shop? Looking to get a AEM brute force intake to go along with the exhaust mod.
