brakes

Postby disallow » Sun May 17, 2009 5:39 am

Well the front brakes need doing on my 05 SE.

In my Hondas, the recommendation has always been 'stick with OEM' and I am leaning in that direction. Mostly because I don't plan on replacing the rotors, or even machining them (as long as they are in reasonable shape).

The theory being that OE pads supply the right level of hardness to prevent damaging the OE rotors. I have had experience where I put 'lifetime' pads on my civic. Within a month, the OE rotors were so warped, it felt like you dropped a quarter into the cheap motel vibrating bed every time you came to a stop.

Thoughts?

If you're going to stick with the stock rotors at least make sure they are within spec before putting on new pads. If it was me, I'd also make sure that they are true and don't need to be turned. Otherwise the new pads may not bed well.

BTW, I am a fairly aggressive driver, so when my brakes need to be replaced, I take the opportunity to upgrade them. I always go with a quality slotted (not drilled) rotor and matching ceramic compound pads. I replace them in pairs. This costs more, but these things are stopping the vehicle and I want to make sure that when I need to stop, I can.

Just my 2 cents.

I just put on EBC rotors with EBC green pads and love it. Even the wife noticed a difference right away.

Machining the rotors if they can be machined is the best way to make the new pads last a long time and no vibrations due to a warped rotor. machining costs around 13.00 a rotor. I due not $ skimp on brakes.

well i'm done doin the brake pads. Very easy job, I was in and out in about 30 minutes.

The rotors still had a mirror finish with no grooves. They don't vibrate currently, so I left them as is. Stopping performance is... well the same as before... :) Which is pretty good...

paid a fortune at the dealer ($125!!!). A/M ceramics were about 1/2 the cost.
