75w90 versus 80w90

Postby AZRoushStang » Fri Feb 02, 2007 3:55 pm

Okay, so in my slow progress through the 30K fluid change. I have come to a realization....Nobody sells 80w90 full synthetic gear oil!!!!

Everybody has 75w90, but nobody has 80w90....

Is there really that much of a difference between 75w90 and 80w90???? It doesn't seem like a lot, but I just don't know....

Looks like Nissan and Amsoil are your only options.

If its an on road only rig , 75w-90 is fine , but for off road use you will want the extra thickness of the 80w-90 ...or look into Redline Shockproof Heavy weight !! Its worked wonders in our super heavy load FWD transmissions .....

Mainly it is a street vehicle....my "off-roading" is really confined to forest service roads and the such...and even then I only keep in 4hi just because I like the way it rides better then in 2wd.....

I went a round or two with the local dealerships about this one last fall as 80w90 is great for the mid to southern states but at -45C northern Canada temperatures 80w90 oil is grease and doesn't provide much lubricity. The best answer I could get was that unofficially the northern Nissan dealerships just drop 75w90 in the front final drive diffs and haven't had failures due to using a non-spec gear oil. As to long term wear, who knows...
