check engine light

I have a 97 pathfinder and want to know how to turn off the check engine light. I have resolved the problem and reset the light a number of times but the light keeps coming back on. Is there a way I can disconnect the light or turn it off (not reset it)

Disconnect the battery for a half hour or so. If the light comes back on...you have a code you have not resolved yet. Mine is on from the evap system...which just needs blown out I think as the charcoal has clogged the hose.
