From 16" to 17" rims

Postby johnguti » Sat Sep 26, 2009 8:53 pm

Hello Pathfinder owners of the world, it is me again. I want to thank those individuals who responded to my inquiries, you're awesome! Next, in my continuing quest to change rims, I have stock 16" rims in an 08 S and would like to go 17" rims like the other models LE and SE. Does it implies only getting 17" rims and installing them or does it require other modification? So, I want to go from 16" S to 17" LE/SE. Thanks, Johnny

if your just adding 17's from another stock path you wont need to mod anything its just plug and play

TPS monitor system may have to be reset, not certain.

Speedo may need to be recalibrated if the outside diameter of the new tires are different than stock.

If you use the TPMS sensors from the 17 inch wheels that you get, they will need to be re-calibrated. Or you can take the sensors off your original wheels and switch them to the 17's.
As for the speedometer, the accuracy should be about the same. The stock tires between the 16 and 17 inch wheels have different side profiles to compensate for the difference.

I went from the 16's on my '06 SE to the 17" LE wheels ...no changes other than swapping over the TPMS sensors ... Running a 275-60-17 tire ...One size wider than stock but fit well and are only about 1/4 inch taller ...

yup, you should be fine. swapping over the TPSM will be the only thing you need to do.

there is a tolerance of something like +/- 3% built into the speedo to accommodate the tire/wheel combos from one trim spec to the next.

other than that, its just a matter of getting the tires that will work for you. you can throw some pretty good size rubber on a Pathy without any modifications at all. just watch the outside diameter and width and you will be fine.

there a bunch of guys on here with a huge variety of tire/wheel sizes. most of them say something about it in their signatures. some of the guys that are on the larger side of the spectrum have at least 3" lifts, but there are quite a few that don't.

good luck and post some pics when ur done =]

Be aware that if you're spare is still a 16 you could have differential problems if you have to use the spare on the rear, or on the front also if 4wd.

Hey, Everyone. I have a question about the removal of the tire pressure sensors when going to a different rim. I too have the 17in SE Pathfinder rims. Did anyone have issues with removing the tire pressure sensors from the old rim? One mechanic told me that he cannot guarantee that he can remove them without breaking them. I would appreciate some feedback on this. Thanks.

That is what I heard from the Infinity dealership when I asked them to move the TPMS from one set of wheels to another. They can not guarantee that they wont break them, but if done carefully there should be no problems. Go with a reputable place when swapping over and there will be less chances of things going wrong. Every time I'm trying to save a few bucks going to a small shops I end up with scratched rims and misbalanced wheels.

They like to say that for some reason. I Just swapped my 16" rims and tires for 17" SE Pathfinder rims, with Michelin rubber. My mechanic just unbolted the sensor and it slipped right off the rim. I'm happy to say that the Pathfinder looks much better with 17" rims on it rather than the 16" that the S trim comes with from the factory.

Where did you take it for the swapping? Small tire shop or...

I went to my local mechanic, and he did the swap for me. It helps that he used to be a head mechanic for a Nissan dealership too, so he had all the tools necessary for working on it.

... we have open diffs , so there should be no issues in running a different size tire on one for a short distance ... as long as you stay out of 4wd , then you could have transfercase issues ...

So you say you switched from 2008 Pathy S rims to 2008 Pathy LE rims. Which are those, the ones with the 6 spokes grooved or 6 spokes flat?
