Changed my U Joint - best 11 bucks i've spent.

Postby The_David » Sun Sep 27, 2009 11:03 pm

So I finally got around to changing my u joint because I had the wheel vibration when I got above 60 mph. Oh man what a difference! The truck had the shake when I got it a few months ago, and I was thinking it was tire balance. Thanks to this board I found the joint was shot.
I found it to be a simple job, but it was a huge pain to listen the bolts and to pound the old one out. I almost gave up on the driveline bolts because they were so tight. but with the help of some wrench on wrench action I finally got them off.
after about a week, I'm getting about 2mpg more now.

Thinking back on it I should have took some pics for a walkthrough, but it was my first time and was not sure how'd it would go.

Anyway, glad you guys are around and here's to more projects.

I ended up getting the non greaseable one, since I figured I’d be to lazy to grease it and it does have a lifetime warranty.
For the price it would not hurt to both while you had the axle out, but I just bought the 1 before I started to take it apart, and I could rattle it by hand when the axle was bolted in.

I replaced the joint on the front axle, the end that bolted to the transmission.
When I was under there I noticed the back axle is flinging grease on the end that bolts to the trans. So I’m thinking that will be replaced soon.

I think I am having the same symptoms you described above, but have no idea how to replace these myself. Any idea how much would a mechanic/dealership charge to replace a u-bolt?

Thanks,
Jarod

The Stealership charged me $250.

I was sooo nice to get rid of that vibration, though.

Are these on bot the front drivetrain and rear drivetrain? Total of 4 ?

Also I saw on another forum you need a press to compress the needle bearing to remove it from the assembly, are they sprung ?

Did you have to use a manual for this or was it pretty straight forward? I had Nissan check mine out right before the powertrain warrantee was up and they replaced the front one. Now of course after the warrantee the rear one goes out. I think Nissan shouldve replaced both......oh well.

Its pretty straight forward, and easy. All I used was a hammer and some crappy sockets.

which joint exactly did you replace? I am having the same issues now with the vibration above 60mph, but before i was hearing a loud sweaky noise coming from underneath the car which i knew it was going to be a u-joint. I took it to Nissan and they replaced the front u-joint on the rear shaft. So with the vibration, i am trying to get an idea of which one has gone bad now.
