Cold Air Blowing Out of Vents When Idling

Postby Johnny05Finder » Fri Dec 18, 2009 9:46 am

When I am in my car and the engine is heated up the heat comes out great when I'm driving and moving along. When I'm stopped at a light for a few minutes or idling the air that comes out is a lot colder. Any ideas what this could be? This is on my 2005 Pathfinder. Anybody else experiencing this?

I'm going to guess you're low on coolant, so it's not circulating well through the heater loop when at idle.

ditto. Same happened to me last winter. Had the dealer test for leaks, but never found any.

Check coolant levels, pressure check system to see if there are any leaks, Maybe check to see if the fan clutch has gone bad. I had that happen in a previous car when I had heat at idle then cold air blowing while driving.

most probably low on coolant. if the level seems to be ok, there's air in the system. I had the same issue about a month ago. Added about half a liter of coolant. now it becomes Africa inside in about 10-15 minutes at idle at -10 celcius outside temperature. :) I am loving the heater in the Pathy.

Air bubble in the system ... they got to put the pressure in it with the machine that plugs in two hose seperatly or you can bleed it urself but its way much more PITA ... the dealer did it for me for free and the last oil change no problems since , just hot and warm air :)

this actually happened to me today. I was going to the dealer for a separate issue and asked them what it might be and he told me that there might be an air pocket in the heating system and it might work its way out. I am honestly fed up with my path. 3 trips for the fuel sensor relay, already had to replace the front u-joint on the rear shaft now the rear u-joint is going out and now the heater isnt working properly.... "sigh" i need a cold one right about now.

Oh yeah and i am still having problems with the fuel sensor relay...... and they can't figure out what is going on with it.

It sounds like your Path was made in Spain. :) fuel sensor is common for the trucks made there. I had no issues with mine so far. and mine was made in US. U joints are also common problem but replacing them is cheap. I got heavier duty joints from rockauto.com and forgot about them :)

Happens to mine about every 6-8 months. Warm the engine, drive up on a slope (front higher then the rear), slowly open then radiator cap.

Wrong Order...unless you work at a burn clinic and are trying to drum up business...

Drive up slope and remove cap, with the truck cold. Let it warm up with the cap off...rev the engine a couple times.

hehe. I'm in North FL, and believe it or not it still drops to the high 20's-30's occasionally in the winter. Usually I just need it for defrost tho.
