Gas Mileage (MPG)

Postby speedline » Sun Jan 31, 2010 4:56 pm

Hey all, through the winter here my MPG has gone down to around 12.6MPG In the summer I was running around 15-18MPG. Any thoughts as to why. My 07 Path has 35,000miles on it. I thought maybe a dirty fuel filter but not too sure.

I have noticed the same thing on my 05 Pathfinder. I just figured it was the colder air and the winterized fuel.

could be a lot of things, no? alignment...gas....tire pressure...different driving habits, etc? Image

I haven't done any calculations yet, but I can tell my mileage has been crap all winter. But, I also run my tires in the 30 PSI range to get more surface area contact (I usually run over 40 PSI). I'm only idling a couple minutes each morning to scrape all the ice and snow off, so I'm chalking up the bad MPG to the winter fuel mix and low tire PSI.

Are you using 4WD a lot in winter? This will certainly drag down your MPG.

Check for the obvious: dragging brakes, low tire pressure, etc.

Yes had low tire pressure a month ago, but fine since then. The Path sits in a garage overnight so nearly no warm up. Here's the other thing. I have a 04 3/4 ton Ram truck, It gets about 12MPG all the time (without towing) Why would one vehicle drop so drasticly and the big hemi doesn't.

One possibility between the two vehicles is emissions. The 3/4 ton isn't subject to the same emissions requirements and perhaps isn't hit as hard by the winter fuel blend. I'm hoping mine jumps up in the summer. I've been averaging 17-19mpg on my commute this winter. 17-18 when I let it warm up a lot and 18-19mpg otherwise.

I can't see a difference with premium fuel as far as economy goes, but I can tell a performance difference. I usually pass four-five trucks each day on my commute and it really rips off faster running premium.

I had the same problem but mine was caused from my girlfriend driving my truck too much. I took it back reset the MPG meter and I am back up to 18.6.

Try resetting yours and see if your numbers are still so low.

Gas mileage will decrease a bit just due to very low intake air temps. the denser the air the more fuel the truck adds in

my gas mileage blows no matter what...living at 5000+ ft above sea level kills gas mileage! I average about 15-16mpg no matter how i drive.

I was just about to post the same question. My gas mileage has gradually dropped (from about 18 to 15, so not as drastic). I know nothing has been different as far as the actual driving goes (same style driving and reset the MPG readout several times)...

I had the same problem last yr, around 14 miles to the gallon, this yr I average 16 MPG.

We had a warm spell yesterday (over 60) and the gas mileage started to creep up. Today we had snow again and the mileage started to drop (of course, there was also a lot of wind). I have a feeling though, the temperature is indeed the problem as some much more knowledgeable than I have suggested...

that's assuming the mpg computer calculator is even accurate.

knowing the common problems with the fuel sender unit and the fuel guage read out, I don't think it's accurate.
