2006 Pathfinder won't engage 4 wheel low.

Postby ronnielyons » Wed Apr 21, 2010 12:59 pm

I turn the selector to 4 wheel high and drive slowly, they engage and the LCD symbol indicates such and all 4 wheels turn solid. Turn it too 4 wheel low and the little blinking wheel symbol just keeps blinking on the front wheels and the transfer case never engages 4 wheel low. I've done this sitting still in neutral, as well as moving forward very slowly in neutral with the engine running. My suspicion is the electric solenoid that engages 4 wheel low is stuck, since 4WL hasn't been engaged more than 3 times in 30,000 miles. Any suggestions? Where is this solenoid?

When in Neutral step on the brakes and hold while you change it to 4lo, that should be your problem. Let me know how that works for ya.

With the brake pressed then put into gear.

+1 on the brakes and neutral. also the same for disengaging.

do you need to have the steering facing forward ?

had a friend break his front diff on an Xterra by trying to engage low with the wheels turned all the way. just coincidence?

Thanks for the tip on the brakes. That's the one thing I hadn't done. I'm sitting still, tranny in neutral and trying to engage 4 low. The only thing I hadn't done was step on the brake. I'll keep ya posted.
