87 pathfinder smoking

Postby southernboy » Fri Jun 18, 2010 11:01 am

I just bought a 87 pathfinder and love it. I do have a problem with it. It seams to smoke sometimes. I mean a plume of white smoke will come out of the tail pipe. It does not do it all them time, just sometimes. It is a v6 motor that runs very strong. I dont know the displacment of it though. Any info would help.
Thanks
Rudy

it's a 3.0 (3000 CC) rated at 153 HP, usually if the smoke is white that is burnt oil

I know its burnt oil. What normaly causes it in these motors. Bad Rings? The problem is it only does it every so often. I can drive 20 miles with out it smoking then it will smoke for 1 mile then stop for a wile and repeat. Hot cold does not matter.

burnt oil is white?...funny I always thought white smoke is either coolant if it's constant or moisture in the exhaust if its intermittent.

Black smoke is oil and white is water. You may have a head gasket going. Check your dipstick for foam. That is the first indicator, next would be oil floating in the reservoir. Catch it before it seizes the engine.

I thought black smoke was too much fuel or rich mixture. Blue smoke is oil. And, white smoke is coolant getting into combustion chamber?
