Replacing the horn because the ground horn is blown at $230?

Postby Noeliajara » Wed May 12, 2010 7:43 am

I own a 2005 Pathfinder and the car has gone mute. I took it to the dealer and they claim that they need to replace the horn because the ground is blown. I was outrage at the 230 fee. Can someone tell me if this is reasonable and/or it can be done by anyone if I get the part? Where can I get the part?

Check the parts drawing here:

As far as I can tell, the horn module (Part Num: 25620-R51001) is $50.21. If you can do some troubleshooting on your horn to verify that it is a "blown ground", it might be worth doing it yourself.

that's crazy! Unless the guy spend 2 hours diagnosing a simple 2 wire circuit, they're taking you for a ride. Besides that, you can't "blow" the ground, even if it shorted, it would only pop the fuse. Check for power, then ground, then just replace. You can test them independently to see which is faulty. That should have taken about 5 min to access and test. I have seen lots of horns on R51's go. There are 2 of them - front, drivers' side corner of engine bay if i remember....

True you can't blow a ground circuit but the ground circuit inside the horn could be broken. I would test the horn to see if it works. Its easily accessible if you take off the grill. Disconnect the horn and connect it to a 12v power source to see if it sounds. I always use my son's 12v Power Wheels battery for testing, haha. If it doesn't sound with 12v applied, then replace. If it sounds, then there's something wrong with the wiring in the vehicle leading up to the horn.

nice work! Just remember it's not all techs at all dealers....sounds like you had a moron when you went in, but many would fix that for next to nothing....

Hi,

I also have an 05 pathfinder and had a question related to the horn.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me which wire is positive and negative at the actual horn.

Looks like the upper wire is green and the one below it is black.

Also, does anyone know if it's a negative or positive system? meaning when your in the truck and you press the horn does it apply 12 volts or a ground to make the horn sound?

Thanks in advance
