Infrared Camera

Postby mar1 » Sun Jul 11, 2010 2:40 pm

thinking of adding a front view IR camera similar to the ones in beamers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C5RVtcR0Y4

normal IR cameras have too little IR light to be really effective in cars.

anywhere i can buy proper IR lights and mount in bumper?

any camera can pick up IR signals and see in the dark, so thats not a problem.

EDIT - found this earlier, but toooo expensive @3500 USD.

This is basically an impossible DIY project without a ton of cash. The BMW system has adaptive headlights and a computer system processing images. They also must use some type of thermal imaging to tell the difference between an object and a living creature.

You can pickup IR illuminators and cameras from places that sell CCTV equipment. Without image processing hardware/software and some headlight mods you won't be able to see much of anything because your headlights would overpower the IR. If you wanted to ride with headlights off and just use IR for some type of stealth mode driving this option might work. I can't imagine any legal reason anybody would want to do that though.

regular ones they sell are not nearly enough to illuminate a proper distance.

Yeah you can emit IR max of about 300ft with the stuff you can buy for CCTV use. You would also need multiple IR emitters as they act more like a spotlight than a floodlight. You can probably rig something removable to your roof rack or grill guard.

Those FLIR cameras are pretty expensive good luck.
